SUEN’s World

“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions”; so true a quote as I have always believed that our lives are framed by our experiences. I am delighted by many things but somehow they seem to always relate to satisfying my senses. I love music that soothes my soul, the beauty in jewellery, fashion, art, furniture and nature, the gorgeous smell of a good fragrance (and this brings back memories of Grasse, home to all perfumerie), the wonderful feel of nice fabric and bed linen to the simple satisfaction of delicious dining experiences.”

Biarritz 2016

``A drive through the scenic routes of the Pyrenees landed me in Biarritz, a stylish beach town on France’s southwestern coast, on the Bay of Biscay. It is a beautiful gem of a coastal resort that emanates style, elegance and heritage.``

Spain San Sebastian, Akelare

Every course was well presented in an innovative, playful or in some cases poetic style.

The beautiful experience at this restaurant started as I entered the building which was perched on the edge of a cliff. I was totally captivated by the magnificent view of the Bay of Biscay below.

Spain Barcelona Sagrada

“As a young teenager, I was introduced to and was captivated by the works of Salvador Dali and hence, Barcelona was a big treat for me. I was totally immersed in the architecture of Antoni Gaudi that combined gothicism and surrealism in modernist styles, this simply blew me away. The exotic architecture of the lighting here in Sagrada Familia was chillingly silencing, a truly unique experience for the soul”

“A tour gastronomique to the town of San Sebastian in Spain’s Basque country was simply satisfying to all my senses. I now have imprinted in my memory a truly spectacular dining experience at Akalare, a much renowned 3 Michelin starred restaurant perched on a hill with jaw-dropping views of the Bay of Biscay. I felt like I was living a dream, everything just seemed perfect for the afternoon”

A magical winter playground; where skiing is a dance and the mountain always leads. Indeed, so close to heaven, down to earth.

As Ise Shima beckoned, the weather was as perfect as the environment required for fine pearl farming.

As Ise Shima beckoned, the weather was as perfect as the environment required for fine pearl farming.

Pearl farming involves a complex partnership with nature; many factors determine the quality and size of a pearl and the rate of growth of that pearl in an oyster.

null

Oysters are placed in nets to protect them from predators, which include sea turtles and rays.

null

These nets are hung vertically with stabilisers and interspersed buoys that hold the oysters at depths of around 5-6 metres.

null

Oysters make pearls on its own secretion and deposit of iridescent layers of nacre around an irritant that gets into its shell.

At oyster farms, when the mollusc is large enough, a worker carefully pries open the shell and inserts the “irritant”, which is usually a small bead of shell (typically from a freshwater mussel) or a mantle tissue (the part of a mollusc that secretes shell-like material), obtained from another pearl oyster. This process is called grafting. Not every bead becomes a pearl but those that do stretch out the oyster tissue around it.

null

To replace lost oysters, farmers would collect spat or larva from the surrounding waters.
And the cycle thus continues
